At an anniversary, there's almost always someone who wants to say something. A spouse, a director, a colleague who was there for twenty years of it. On an open sloop the party sits close together and there's no background music from another group, so a speech lands without a microphone.
The three kinds of anniversaries we sail most are the wedding anniversary, the company anniversary and the work anniversary. They differ in who's there, in pace, and in what's practically needed.
What they share: the sloop is yours alone, the skipper sails the loop along the city canal, and you decide when to speak, toast or take photos.
Three kinds of anniversaries, three approaches
Wedding anniversary
Often three generations at once: the couple, the children and the grandchildren. That calls for a calm pace and attention at boarding. An hour and a half is usually enough. A sharing platter works better than a full dinner, because it leaves room to move around and talk.
Company anniversary
Usually a larger party, usually with clients along. Two hours gives room for a welcome word at boarding, a moment halfway and a closing. The invoice goes in the company's name and you can get a tailored quote in advance.
Work anniversary
One person takes centre stage, the rest is the audience. That calls for a clear moment: the boat lies still, words are spoken, glasses are raised and then the cruise continues. Agree that moment with the skipper in advance.
A speech on board that lands
The sloop is an open boat of about twelve metres. With the motor stopped and the group quiet, a speaker at one end can be heard at the other. That works up to about thirty people.
What helps: have the skipper stop somewhere sheltered before the speaking starts, turn the music off, and have the speaker stand in the middle of the boat rather than at the front. Wind almost always comes from one direction, so speaking downwind makes a difference.
What doesn't work: a programme of four ten-minute speakers. Attention on a boat holds for about five minutes, then the group starts looking at the scenery. Keep it short and spread it across the cruise.
If you want to show a presentation or video, that's not practical on board. Do it on shore and use the cruise for the informal part.
Accessibility and comfort
You board from the quayside, using a step. For someone with a walker or a bad knee that's doable, but not without help. Tell us in advance; we'll pick a mooring spot with a favourable quay height and the skipper will help with boarding.
A wheelchair can't be placed on the sloop independently. Get in touch if that applies, and we'll discuss what is possible in your situation.
The sloop has no toilet. With a party of older guests and a two-hour cruise, that's a reason to keep it to an hour and a half, or to agree a short stop along the way in advance.
