Gender reveal on a boat in Zwolle
At a gender reveal, only one moment counts. The rest of the cruise is the build-up, and it's exactly that build-up that makes the moment bigger.
- Party size
- 10 to 30 people
- Duration
- 1.5 hours
- Reveal
- No waste in the water
- From
- € 32,50 p.p.

A reveal in the back garden is over within thirty seconds. On a boat, the tension builds: everyone steps aboard together, the canal glides past, the guessing starts, and then comes the moment the skipper brings the boat to a stop.
Practically, though, the water is a constraint. Everything that's standard at a gender reveal, balloons filled with confetti, powder cannons, smoke flares, leaves debris that ends up in the canal. That's not allowed and it's not what we want either. There are alternatives that work just as well and look better on camera.
An hour and a half is the usual length: forty-five minutes of build-up, the moment itself, and then time to talk it over and raise a glass.
Reveal ideas that work on the water
Cutting a cake
The safest and most photographed form. The baker colours the inside pink or blue, you cut it while the boat lies still. No waste, no wind to spoil things, and everyone sees it at the same time.
A box of balloons
A closed box of helium balloons that you open. Important: keep the balloons on ribbons so they can't fly off. Released balloons end up in the water or the reeds and aren't allowed.
Coloured clothing or umbrellas
Every guest gets a sealed envelope or a closed umbrella at boarding. On the signal, everyone opens theirs at once. Works brilliantly in photos from the quay and leaves nothing behind.
A message on the canal
A banner or sign on the quay, hung by someone in on the secret. The boat rounds the bend and there it is. Takes preparation, but the effect is huge.
What's not allowed on board
Loose confetti, powder cannons and confetti cannons. The powder and paper blow across the water and can't be cleaned up.
Smoke flares and torches. Open flames aren't allowed on a boat, and on an open sloop the smoke blows straight into the party.
Released balloons. They always end up somewhere in the water or the greenery.
Fireworks of any kind.
What does work: anything that sits inside a box, an envelope, a cake or a piece of fabric and doesn't burst apart.
Who keeps the secret, and where the camera goes
The secret. If no one in the party is allowed to know, the envelope from the ultrasound can be left with the skipper or with the baker making the cake. Tell us when booking who the contact person in the know is, and we'll keep all communication with them.
The camera. A moving boat is no place for a tripod. The sharpest shots happen when the boat lies still and the photographer is on board, or when the photographer stands on the quay at a pre-agreed spot. Agree that spot when you book.
The light. An hour before sunset, the light is soft and colours photograph at their best. In the middle of a sunny day you get harsh shadows on faces. If you want the reveal on camera, choose late afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about gender reveal in Zwolle
Can we use confetti or a smoke cannon for the reveal?
No. Confetti, powder cannons, smoke flares and released balloons aren't allowed on board, because the material ends up in the canal and can't be cleaned up. A cake, a box of balloons on ribbons or coloured umbrellas work just as well and leave nothing behind.
Can the skipper keep the secret?
Yes. You can leave the envelope with the result with us or with the baker, so no one in the party knows. Tell us when booking who stays in touch on your behalf.
Where do you stop for the reveal moment?
We agree that in advance. Popular spots are the Sassenpoort and the Eekwal, because they make the best backdrop in photos. The skipper stops there so the picture doesn't move.
What's the best time to sail for photos?
About an hour before sunset. The light is soft then and the colours come out well. In the middle of a sunny day you get harsh shadows on faces.
