Most organisers put the cruise at the start of the day. You have one fixed point where everyone has to be, the group gets to know each other before the programme begins, and you never have to round anyone up again. An hour and a half to two hours is enough to do that job without eating up the day.
The boat is completely private. That means you decide what happens on board, what music plays and which challenges the bride or groom has to complete. The skipper sails and otherwise stays out of it, unless you'd rather rope him in.
The Sloep Rondje Gracht Zwolle takes thirty people, so almost any stag or hen group fits on in one go. There's no toilet on board: for a two-hour cruise with a group that's drinking steadily, we agree a short stop along the way in advance.
Where the cruise fits into the day's plan
As the opener, around midday
Gather at the boarding point, reveal the gift or the fancy dress on board and kick off the programme with a drink. After mooring, you walk straight into the city centre for the rest of the day.
As the middle block, late afternoon
Handy when the day started with an active challenge and everyone wants to sit down for a bit. Two hours on the water with food on board fills the gap between the afternoon and the evening programme.
As the closer, in the evening
In summer, the canal is at its finest around nine. If you want the music louder than the city centre allows, we sail out of the city by arrangement.
What works on board and what doesn't
The sloop is stable and roomy, but it's still an open boat. Games where people have to run, throw or stand up while sailing are a bad idea. Anything that can be done sitting down works brilliantly.
Good on board: quiz questions about the couple, challenge envelopes, having the bride or groom guess who sent in which anecdote, a photo frame with the canal as backdrop, a video message recorded by every guest.
Better on shore: anything involving water, anything involving paint or glitter, and challenges that need passers-by. Confetti, spray cans and smoke machines aren't allowed, because the mess ends up in the canal.
Music runs through the sound system on board. Bring one phone with a playlist and appoint someone in advance to manage the music, or the whole cruise turns into song-switching.
Splitting the costs fairly
With a package you pay per person, which makes splitting easy: everyone puts in the same amount and no bill lands on board, because the drinks are unlimited. That saves the hassle of chasing payments afterwards.
With plain boat hire you pay per boat. That's cheaper for small groups, but then you pay for drinks separately or bring your own. For a group of twelve sailing for two hours, the difference between the two comes to about twenty euros per person.
How to plan it
- Decide whether the cruise is the opener, the middle block or the closer of the day.
- Count the group and choose the sloop accordingly. Above twelve people, the large sloop is the obvious choice.
- Book at least four to six weeks ahead. Saturdays in spring and summer fill up fast.
- Appoint one person as contact for the music and one for the challenges.
- Confirm the final headcount no later than a week in advance.

The city canal is flat water and we sail slowly, so seasickness doesn't happen in practice. If someone does feel unwell, the skipper moors at the nearest quay.
