A sunset cruise isn't a cruise you book for seven o'clock. In June the sun sets just after ten, in December at half past four. Depart at seven in both months and one time you'll be cruising in broad daylight, the other in the dark.
The finest light falls in the hour before sunset and the twenty minutes after. To spend the whole cruise inside it, depart about an hour before sunset for a ninety-minute trip. You start in golden light and end at dusk, with the first city lights reflected in the water.

Which season is the finest
May and June. The longest evenings and the softest light, but you don't depart until around nine. For a group with children or older guests, that is late.
August and September. In our view the best compromise: the sun sets around eight or nine, it is still warm enough for an open boat, and the cruise ends at a normal hour. These are also the months with the most colour in the sky.
October and November. Dark early, so you depart around half past five or four o'clock. Cold on an open sloop, but the sky above the canal is often at its most spectacular in these months. Bring a coat.
March and April. The evenings stretch out again and the canal is still quiet. Expect cold evenings.
Practical for the evening cruise
Clothing. Once the sun is down, it cools quickly on the water, even in summer. A coat or jumper is almost always needed, even if the day was warm. Blankets are available on board.
Photos. Ask the skipper to lie still at the Sassenpoort or the Watertoren just after the sun has set. The twenty minutes after sunset give the softest light and the finest reflection in the water.
Clouds. A completely clear sky gives less colour than a sky with some cloud. A partly cloudy evening is no bad news for a sunset cruise.
Booking. The evening slots in July and August fill up first. If you want a Saturday in high season, book well ahead.
