The tricky part of a graduation party is the guest list. Family who are proud, fellow students who mainly want to celebrate, and sometimes a supervisor or colleague. Those groups don't mix in a pub; within ten minutes they've drifted to their own corners.
On a sloop, that can't happen. Everyone sits within earshot of each other and the surroundings supply the conversation. An hour and a half is enough to let that mingling happen, after which you can carry on into town with your friends.
Added bonus: the costs are known upfront and per person. With a group where students chip in, that's a lot more comfortable than an open tab in a pub.
Family and friends in one party
Put the cruise at the start of the evening. Family is still around and the friends have already arrived. After mooring, the older part of the party can head home while the friends carry on in the city centre, without an awkward goodbye moment.
Keep the drinking moderate on the cruise itself. Unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks is fine, but plan the big night after the boat, not on it. A boat full of drunk guests with your in-laws on board is no fun for anyone.
A short speech works well on board. Have the skipper bring the boat to a stop, keep it to three minutes, and do it halfway through the cruise, not at the start.
Photos with your degree, gown or diploma
The classic graduation photo with your degree certificate works better on the canal than in front of a university building, simply because there's more backdrop. The Sassenpoort and the Eekwal are the two spots where it looks best.
Ask the skipper in advance to stop at one of those points. A moving boat puts motion in the frame and ruins the group photo.
Late afternoon or early evening gives the best light. In June and July that lasts until around nine.
Keeping it affordable
An hour and a half with unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks costs € 32,50 per person. For a group of fifteen that comes to € 487,50 in total, and no extra bill lands on board.
Want it cheaper? Plain boat hire is an option: € 305,- for an hour and a half for the whole boat. You bring your own drinks and snacks. With twenty people, that puts you under sixteen euros per person.
The packages apply from payment for ten people. With fewer, plain boat hire is always cheaper.
How to plan it
- Plan the cruise for the start of the evening, so family and friends meet without locking up the whole night.
- Book early if you're sailing in June or July, because that's the busiest season.
- Agree a spot for the photo with your degree or diploma and have the boat lie still there.
- Keep the speech to three minutes and do it halfway through.
