An end-of-season party on the water works for the same reason it works in the clubhouse, but without the clubhouse. The group stays together, there is a clear start and finish, and the awards ceremony gets a backdrop.
In practice we mostly sail in May and June, when the competitions wind down. Those are also the busiest months on the canal, so booking early is no idle advice for a team outing.
The sloop seats thirty. For a squad of twenty players plus coaches, physios and committee members, that is plenty. For larger club outings, small electric boats cruise along around the sloop.
The awards ceremony on board
Have the skipper lie still halfway through the cruise in a sheltered spot. No engine noise, no wind blowing through the speech, and everyone sits still. Five to ten minutes is enough for the trophies, the top scorer and the player of the year.
Do it halfway through, not at the end. At the end of a cruise with a drinks package, a sports team's attention span is noticeably shorter.
The trophy is welcome on board. What is not allowed: holding it over the side for a photo, or drinking from it and tossing it over the railing. Whatever falls into the water, we don't get back out.
A team photo works best while the boat lies still at the Sassenpoort. Put the photographer on the quay, or have someone shoot from the foredeck.
Youth teams and mixed groups
For youth teams, a cruise of one to one and a half hours is enough. Children's life jackets are available on board and are worn during the cruise. When booking, tell us how many youth players are coming and how old they are.
Alcohol under eighteen is no more allowed on board than in the clubhouse. For a youth team with supervisors, a cruise with soft drinks and pizzas is the obvious choice: that costs € 52,50 per person for an hour and a half.
If parents are coming along, count them in. The limit of thirty people on the main boat is a hard one, and a team of eighteen players plus parents gets there fast.
For a mixed group of players and committee members, a sharing platter works better than pizzas: it leaves room to move around and talk.
Practical for the team manager
Numbers. Confirm the final headcount no later than a week in advance. Packages are priced from ten people and the price per person stays the same, even above thirty.
Sponsor. Want to thank a sponsor on board, or bring a flag or banner? That is fine, as long as everything is secured and the skipper's view stays clear.
Splitting the costs. With a package everyone pays the same amount and nothing gets added on board. For a team fund that is simpler than an open tab.
Toilet. The big sloop doesn't have one. On a two-hour cruise with a drinks package, that is something to mention to the team in advance.

- Add up players, coaches, physios and any parents before you choose the boat.
- Plan the awards ceremony halfway through the cruise and have the skipper lie still for it.
- For a youth team, tell us how many children are coming and how old they are.
