A children's party on board works differently from a playground. There is nothing to win and no obstacle course; the appeal is the sailing itself, the bridges you pass under and the fact that from the water you see everything from below.
The sloop is entirely private. No strangers sail along, so you do not have to keep checking whether everyone is still together. For parents that is the biggest difference with an outing on land: the group cannot go anywhere.
One to one and a half hours is enough for most ages. Longer becomes restless, certainly with children under eight.
What children do on board
Watching for bridges. Passing under a low bridge is the highlight of the trip for children. The skipper announces them and everyone has to duck.
Standing with the skipper. Children may take turns standing at the wheel and sometimes steer for a moment. Mention it when you book and the skipper will make time for it.
Spotting and searching. A simple spotting list works better than a game with rules: the Sassenpoort, the Peperbus, a heron, a boat with a name starting with A. We tell you what you are passing along the way.
What does not work: anything where children have to stand up, run or throw. On a moving boat everyone stays seated.
Safety with children on board
Life jackets. Children's life jackets are on board. Give us the ages when you book and the right sizes will be ready. For children who cannot swim they are compulsory.
Supervision. Count on at least one adult per five children, and one per three for children under six. The skipper is sailing and cannot watch them.
Boarding and disembarking. This is the only genuinely tricky moment. We moor at the quay and let the children board one by one while an adult on board receives them.
Toilet. There is no toilet on board. With children that is the main reason to keep the trip to an hour, or to agree a short stop in advance. Let everyone go just before departure.
Food and drink on board
There is no galley on board: everything comes ready to serve. The Pizza Cruise therefore works well for children from about eight — fresh pizzas on board, with nothing to cut or reheat.
For smaller groups or younger children, hiring the boat by the hour is usually easier. You rent the whole boat and bring whatever you like: cake, biscuits, cartons of juice.
Practical point: there is no table on board. Everything is eaten on your lap, so choose something easy to handle. Cream cake on an open boat in summer is not a good idea.
Decorating is allowed. Garlands and bunting are welcome as long as they are fastened. Loose balloons and confetti are not — they end up in the canal.
