Student outing on a boat in Zwolle

A student society's budget and the price of a private boat don't seem to meet. With boat rental and your own drinks, they do.

A large student group aboard the sloop cruising the Zwolle canal

For student groups, private boat rental is almost always the right format. You pay per boat rather than per person, and you may bring your own food and drinks. For thirty students and two hours of cruising, that comes to twelve euros per person, excluding what you bring yourselves.

The sloop suits intro groups, fraternities, year clubs, study associations and student societies. Up to thirty people on the main boat, and above that, small electric boats cruise along around the sloop.

What you need to sort out in advance isn't the boat but the group. Thirty students on an open boat calls for one contact person who guards the agreements, because the skipper isn't going to have that conversation with thirty people.

How to keep it affordable

Boat rental with your own drinks is the cheapest option. Two hours of cruising costs € 360,- for the whole boat. Split between thirty students, that is twelve euros each. Drinks and snacks you bring yourselves.

If you'd rather not haul anything, the drinks package is € 10,- per person per hour on top of the rental. For thirty students and two hours, the whole cruise then comes to € 960,-, or € 32,- per person for unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks.

The fixed per-person packages are usually more expensive for student groups, because with thirty people you don't benefit from the fixed boat price. Run both numbers before you choose.

Practical: have one person collect the money up front and pay in one go. Thirty separate payment requests afterwards is the reason treasurers grow to hate outings.

Which groups this works for

  • Intro groups

Two hours of cruising at the start of intro week. New students get to know each other without an activity to perform. Alcohol is often unwanted or not allowed during intro weeks, and the cruise works fine without it.

  • Fraternities and year clubs

Smaller groups of ten to twenty people. The sloop is generously sized at that number; for a cruise of more than two hours we agree a short stop in advance, because there is no toilet on board.

  • Study and student associations

Larger groups, often thirty people or more. Above thirty, small electric boats cruise along, one per five extra students at € 50,- per boat per hour.

  • Constitution drinks and board handovers

An hour and a half to two hours, with a moment halfway for a speech or handover. Have the skipper lie still for it.

Agreements up front

One contact person. Appoint someone who speaks to the skipper on behalf of the group and is responsible for the agreements. With thirty students that is not a formality but a condition.

No glass overboard, no people overboard. Jumping in is forbidden: the canal has boat traffic and the water quality isn't up to it. The skipper can cut the cruise short if it happens anyway.

Music through the sound system, with one person in charge. In the city centre we are considerate of residents. Want it louder? Then we cruise out of the city by arrangement, and that takes three hours.

Damage and cleaning. The boat is handed back as it was found. Tidy up yourselves at the end of the cruise — it saves discussion afterwards.

Alcohol under eighteen is no more allowed on board than on shore. Let us know if minors are coming along.

How to plan it

  1. Compare boat rental with your own drinks against a package — with thirty people the difference is big.
  2. Appoint one contact person to communicate with us and with the skipper.
  3. Collect the money up front and pay in one go.
  4. Share the house rules with the group before you step aboard.
  5. Want loud music? Book three hours so there is time to cruise out of the city.

Frequently asked questions about student outing in Zwolle

What does renting a boat with a student society cost?

Private boat rental costs € 360,- for two hours, regardless of the number of people on board up to thirty. Split between thirty students that is twelve euros each. Want unlimited drinks provided, then add € 10,- per person per hour.

May we bring our own drinks on board?

With private boat rental, yes — and for student groups that is usually the cheapest setup. With the packages we provide the drinks, so there is no need to bring anything.

Can we cruise with more than 30 students?

Yes. Above thirty, small electric boats cruise along around the main boat, one per five extra people. With private boat rental that costs € 50,- per boat per hour.

Is the boat suitable for an introduction week?

Yes. A two-hour cruise works well as a way to get acquainted, alcohol-free too. Let us know in your enquiry whether minors are coming along, and we'll match the drinks arrangement to that.

May we jump off the boat into the water?

No. The canal has boat traffic and the water quality isn't up to it. The skipper can cut the cruise short if safety on board is at stake.
