Most canal cruises in Zwolle are public: you buy two tickets and sit among other passengers. With plain boat hire you take the whole sloop, however many people come along. For two people, that means an hour of private cruising for € 250,-, skipper included.
That makes it the right format for moments when you don't want to be disturbed: an anniversary for two, a birthday surprise, a first date that should be something other than coffee, or a marriage proposal. The skipper sails and keeps his distance.
The cruise follows the city canal, past the Eekwal, the Sassenpoort, the Plantagekerk, the Watertoren and Theater de Spiegel. An hour covers the whole loop. An hour and a half gives you room to lie still somewhere for longer.
A marriage proposal on board
A proposal on the water works because you control the moment. You know where the boat is, you know what time, and you know no one will interrupt.
In practice, we agree a point on the route in advance where the sloop comes to a stop. That's your cue. The skipper knows and makes sure the conversation goes quiet at that moment. If you want the moment captured, a photographer can stand on the quay at the agreed spot or simply come aboard.
Tell us when booking that it's a proposal and who we may liaise with without giving the surprise away. Flowers, a bottle on ice and the right music at the right moment are all arranged in consultation.
Choosing the best time of day
Early evening is the most beautiful for most couples: the canal is quieter than during the day and the light is softer. In June and July that can run late; in winter, mid-afternoon is the best alternative.

During the day the canal is busier with other boats, but warmer. In the shoulder seasons that's a real argument: on an open sloop it cools down quickly after sunset.

For € 10,- per person per hour, drinks on board are unlimited: beer, wine, soft drinks and water. For two people and an hour on the water, that comes to € 20,- extra.
Prosecco or sharing platter
A bottle in the ice bucket and something to eat alongside. Tell us what you'd like when you book, and it's ready when you step aboard instead of having to be sorted along the way.
Your own music
Play your own playlist through the sound system. For a proposal, that means you can cue the right song at the right moment.
Flowers and decorations
Your own flowers are welcome on board. We only ask you not to use loose petals or confetti, because they end up in the water.

- Pick a departure time. Early evening gives the most beautiful light; mid-afternoon is more comfortable in winter.

The regular loop along the city canal is the most beautiful route and takes about an hour. Within that loop the skipper can accommodate your wishes, lying still somewhere for longer, for example. If you sail longer than an hour, there's more room to deviate.
